ATESEA holds Conference for Theological Librarians in Bangkok, Thailand

From June 5 – 8, 2016, the Conference for Theological Librarians was conducted in Bangkok Christian Guest House, Bangkok, Thailand. Thirty-five (35) theological librarians from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand had the opportunity to be updated on the current trends and developments in theological librarianship.

Four (4) panelists from Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia shared the challenges being faced and the opportunities available for theological libraries in their own respective contexts. The panelists were Mr. Alan Po, Librarian of Myanmar Institute of Theology; Ms. Hilda Putong, Head Librarian of Jakarta Theological Seminar; Ms. Jitra Samsa, Head of Dewald  Memorial Library and the Head of the Payap University Archives in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and Rev. Arnel Faller, Coordinator for Theological Resource Materials in the Divinity School of Silliman University in the Philippines.

The other invited speakers were:

  • Mr. Tang Sui-Tung of Lutheran Theological Seminary of Hong Kong who spoke on “Current Asian Theological Library Collaboration and Education”
  • Ms. Megumi Flores, the Head Librarian of the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies, talked about “Current Trends and Challenges in Theological Library Management”
  • Dr. Michael Munkuntan of Trinity Theological College discussed the “Potential Directions in the Organization and Preservation of Asian Resources” and
  • Mr. Toong Tjiek Liauw of Petra Christian University in Surabaya, Indonesia led a lecture-workshop on “Current Trends and Challenges in Information Technology and Research.”
  • Dr. Thomas Phillips of Claremont School of Theology, USA and representative of the Foundation for Theological Education in Southeast Asia, engaged the participants in a conversation on the “Future Shape of Theological Libraries.”

On the last day, June 8, the participants had the opportunity to have a  library tour at the Stock Exchange of Thailand’s Maruey Library in Bangkok. This three-storey library boasts of “the biggest collection of economics-related books anywhere in Thailand.”
