Law Choon Sii graduates from ATU doctoral study program

On October 17, 2015, Law Choon Sii of Seminari Theoloji Malaysia (STM) received her Doctor of Theology degree major in New Testament from ATESEA Theological Union (ATU) during the graduation ceremony of STM.

As a scholar of the ATU Doctoral Studies Program, she testifies:

“Let me put on record my heartfelt thanks to ATESEA and FTE in supporting my studies. I am grateful to the Doctor of Theology program offered by ATU:

1. The two methodology seminars, especially “Doing Theology in Asia” not only increased my awareness and sensitivity to relate to the needs and concerns of my local context and people, but also helped me to think, reflect and construct theology as a Malaysian Chinese woman.

2. The three areas of research done as the three modules gave me the opportunities to explore in breadth and depth my area of studies which is New Testament. This curriculum design provides me a big picture as well as working knowledge for my teaching ministry in the seminary (STM) and pastoral ministry in the local church.

3. A dissertation allowed me to study a specific topic in depth. It helped me to practice and develop research skills as well as critical thinking, to do it deeply and thoroughly. At the same time, it also forced me to think about the relevancy and contributions of my research to the Asia context generally and the Malaysia context specifically.

4. Through the ATESEA connection and the leaders of a few seminaries, I had opportunities to do some of my library research in different schools.

My overall experience with the ATU Doctoral Studies Program is great and rewarding.”

Dr. Law Choon Sii’s dissertation is entitled, “A Critical Re-Examination on Jesus’ Encounter with the Canaanite/Syrophoenician Woman (Mattew 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-30)”.

Her examiners were

  • Dr. Wong Kun Chun Eric (Chung Chi Divinity School,
  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong) and
  • Dr. Lim Kar Yong (former faculty of STM).

Dr. Ezra Kok served as her Chief Adviser.

Dr. Law earned her Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) from University of Malaya, Malaysia in 1999. She obtained her Master of Divinity from Trinity Theological College in 2006 and her Master of Theology major in New Testament under the SEAGST program in 2008. She has been teaching at Seminari Theoloji Malaysia since 2010.
